What a $499 website actually looks like.
"How can it be that cheap?" is a fair question, and the honest answer isn't that corners get cut. It's that the thing being sold has changed. Here's exactly what's in a $499 build, what isn't, and how to tell a genuinely good cheap website from a bad one.
What's actually included
| Included | What that means in practice |
|---|---|
| Custom design | Designed around your business and colours, not a stock theme with your logo dropped in. |
| About 5 pages | Typically Home, About, Services, Gallery or Work, Contact. |
| Mobile-first build | Built for phones first, because that's where most of your visitors are. |
| On-page SEO | Proper titles, meta descriptions, headings, alt text and schema markup on every page. |
| Fast loading | Static build, compressed images. Usually loads in under two seconds. |
| Contact form | Goes straight to your inbox. |
| Domain connected | Set up and pointed properly, registered in your name. |
| You own it | You get the files. No compulsory monthly fee. Leave whenever you like. |
What isn't included, honestly
This is the part most cheap-website pages leave out. At the entry price you are not getting:
- E-commerce — product catalogues, carts and payments are a different build
- Booking or scheduling systems — though we can embed an existing tool
- Customer logins or member areas
- Professional photography — we'll use your photos or quality stock
- Full brand identity — logo and brand system design is separate
- An ongoing SEO campaign — the foundations are included, ongoing work isn't
- Twenty pages — more pages, more cost, priced up front
If any of those matter to you, the price goes up, and we tell you that before you commit rather than after.
So how is it possible?
Three reasons, none of them "we cut corners."
The build time collapsed. Work that genuinely took a team weeks in 2020 takes a sharp studio days in 2026. Better tooling, better workflows. That saving gets passed on rather than pocketed.
There's no overhead to fund. No office lease, no account managers, no sales team, no project managers billing hours to attend meetings about your five page site. When you're quoted $15,000 for a brochure site, a lot of that is rent.
Static sites cost almost nothing to run. No database, no plugin licences, hosting that's effectively free. There's no ongoing cost we need to bake in.
What the standard actually looks like
The fastest way to judge a studio is to look at the level they design at. Our concept builds are the clearest example of the craft that goes into every project, entry price included:
- Aurum — a cinematic scroll-driven concept
- Tourbillon — precision, motion and detail
- Éclat and Abyss — two more takes on premium interaction
- The full portfolio — real client work
A $499 build is naturally simpler in scope than those. The design standard behind it is the same.
How to spot a bad cheap website
Cheap isn't the warning sign. These are:
- A compulsory monthly fee. $49/month on a $499 site means you've paid more in rent than for the build inside a year. Ask what it covers.
- You can't take it with you. If leaving means rebuilding from scratch, you rented it. Ask who owns the files.
- The domain isn't in your name. The most damaging one. Always check the registrant.
- It's a recycled template. Ask to see three recent builds. If they share a skeleton, yours will too.
- No SEO fundamentals. If titles, meta descriptions and schema aren't included, you have a brochure that Google can't read.
- Vague change costs. "We'll sort it" becomes an hourly rate later. Get the number in writing.
Is it right for you?
Yes if you're a service business, trade, café, clinic, salon or consultant who needs a professional presence that loads fast, ranks, and turns visitors into enquiries.
No if you're selling hundreds of products, need bookings and logins, or run a business where the website is the product. Those are real builds with real budgets, and we'd rather quote you properly than squeeze you into the wrong package.
